Human Resource Management
Human resource management was created in result of the human relations movement consisting of researchers who study the behaviors of groups of people in the workplace environment. The purpose of human resources management is to ensure that organizational objectives are fulfilled, while anticipating changes within the employee framework. Activities may include recruiting, selecting, training, compensation, appraising, and developing. Human resource can be a key to a company's success by sticking to the business strategies and objectives, as well as maintaining a healthy workplace environment for employees. Some may also describe human resource management as the relationship between the employer and employee. Managers must perform basic functions such as planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling, also known as the management process.
Two approaches of human resources management include strategically reactive and strategically proactive. The main difference between the two is that strategically reactive waits for the problems to happen and strategically proactive anticipates needs and works to prevent them before they occur. Both types are used in the human resources department to maintain a successful workplace. Jeffrey Mello, author of Strategic Human Resource Management, explained that strategically reactive human resources focus on implementing the business strategy, such as growth, new product, innovation, cycle reduction, and new market entry. He also explained that strategically proactive human resources focuses on creating future strategic alternatives such as creating a culture of innovation and creativity, identifying merger and acquisition possibilities, and creating internal capabilities that continually track and align with the marketplace for products, markets, and capital with their respective lead indicators. (Mello, Jeffrey A., 2006, p. 238)
The human resources management philosophy believes that people are the most valuable resource in successfully meeting organizational objectives and in achieving excellence of service to the public. People should be managed sensitively with respect for their individual dignity and integrity, in a safe work environment which presents to the entire workforce equal opportunities for growth and development within the frame of government goals. Many work environments foster excellence in performance, a sense of equity, honesty, fairness, and openness, as well as a spirit of teamwork and co-operation. Providing employees with opportunities for growth and development, and expecting dedication and commitment are just a few qualities that the human resources department has a large focus on.
