Question: If you were the President, how would you handle this problem?
Answer: If I were to be the president of this firm, I would ask both the IT and the HR department
heads each to outline a project plan for the approach that each favored. However, this would not
work as I would have two competing plans, with the IT head's plan wanting to get rid of those
time clocks and having a centralized system where the employees would check in and out via the
computer terminals at the registers. The HR head wanted to purchase new time clocks as they
knew some of the employees were not that computer literate and would have problems checking
in and out.
Instead of having two competing plans, I would want to them to work together to prepare action
plans for each of their recommended solutions to the current problem with the time clocks. The
two department heads could then be asked to plan the cost/benefit studies of both plans. They
should carefully delineate the objective of each project. Acting together, they could choose
the best alternative, based on the cost/benefit studies. Then they could jointly outline the
implementation of the project plan for the solution that they choose.
