Reflective Essay No. 2 - Fair Trade Coffee

Part A

Even though I do not drink coffee, I have been a chocolate lover because I like its unique taste since I was a child. I get my first impression of the chocolate industry when I visited the Cadbury chocolate factory in Dunedin in 2007. I was impressed by the huge mechanic system that is engineered to mass produce chocolates. At that time, I though the process was super cool but I did not have a think about where the cocoa used to produce chocolate comes from. It is not until last year that I watched a TV documentary programme about how the largest chocolate manufacturers from the Western world (e.g. Cadbury, Hershey's, and Nestle) purchase coca raw materials from Western Africa countries where sweatshops and child labours are used. I was shocked by the ugly truth, but I did not think I could do anything to change this status quo, so I keep on buying chocolate of my favourite brands without paying attention to the fair trade issues.

Honestly, I have considered buying only fair trade chocolate since I watched the documentary. However, I thought that there is no way to identify fair trade chocolate since I did not know about the fair-trade labelling as stated in Oxfam New Zealand's (2010) report. Also, I guess that even I know there is such a thing as fair-trade labelling, I really do not want to spend too much time going over every chocolate package to see whether it is a fair-trade one or not. My behaviour is perhaps consistent with the capitalism's view that human beings are rational economic creatures in nature who are primarily motivated by self-interest (Shaw, Barry, & Sansbury, 2009) . By not spending time to select fair-trade chocolate, I had been self-interested because I think that would waste a lot of my limited leisure time, and what I did would not make much difference because the majority of consumers would not know or know but still
