Winter can have a huge effect on people who do not experience it that often. The first winter can be full of excitement, with the experience of a fresh snow, making snow angels and snowman. It can also be full of disappointment with cold temperatures, fearful accidents and depression. I do not think anyone could have experienced a worse winter than the Rudkus family from Upton Sinclair, The Jungle. It is a nonstop struggle to deal with all of the problems that have come to them. When it comes to winter, the cold weather overtook the Rudkus family economically, physically and emotionally.
The Rudkus family once again experiences the lack of money to get through this winter because they realize the necessities to keep warm. Once the weather begins to be something they cannot handle, they struggle to not freeze to death. As the cold weather hits Packingtown, the family needs to buy more clothing to keep warm when they are at work or even at home for the night. To be outside in the freezing weather is not healthy for anyone so it is important to have warm clothing. After a long day at work freezing, the family members desire to go home to a cozy warm place to relax and be with who is close. It makes like easy to live somewhere during winter as long as the house has heat which the Rudkus family does not have. Also the family has to pay for coal to keep the house warm and food to keep themselves alive during the harsh winter. It may be expensive to live in a town that has harsh winters, but it would have been important for the family to know that before they committed to live there. It is hard to see a family struggle when they work so hard but still cannot afford to live. But would it not be better to sacrifice some things in order to save money up for the winter?
