Writing Skills and Academic Essays
Composition II teaches many writing skills within the course. The writing skills that I feel I have mastered during this course are how to establish my topic and how to organize my ideas. These skills will help me in the future with writing and research in other courses and career by writing police reports that are clear and understandable. My writing skills have been strengthened academically by using research as a foundation by having a stronger thesis that is scientifically correct and in text citations. The perception I have of myself as a writer and researcher has improved greatly this semester by my references have got stronger and I've learned to summarize a paragraph and break it down into my own words better. Composition II taught me how to write a strong APA formatted research essay.
What writing skills have you mastered during this course? The writing skills I feel I have mastered during this course are how to establish my topic. Having a strong first sentence will help the reader establish the main idea (Writing a good topic sentence, 2013). A good topic sentence involves three components. A good topic sentence should put forward to an argument (Writing a good topic sentence, 2013). Another good component to good topic sentence is it uses some of the words that you have used in your title (Writing a good topic sentence, 2013). If you have used the title in your topic sentence then you are answering the question. The last component in a good topic sentence is it will tell the reader what the rest of the sentence is going to be about (Writing a good topic sentence, 2013).
When writing an essay there are organizational patterns an individual must think about. If the author is trying to tell a story or past events they would organize their essay in a sequential order (Organizing Your Writing, 2013). When writing a sequential paper you must make sure that all events are written in the order of when they happened (Organizing Your Writing, 2013). Spatially is another form of an organizational pattern. Spatially is "depending upon what works best, you can describe from left to right, bottom to top, center to edge, near too far, or the opposite. These structures will help you take your reader along with you as you explore your observations (Organizing Your Writing, 2013)." The importance of the essay is an organizational tool. The writer can make their main point and following with their factual supportive details or the writer can give supportive details that lead up to the main point (Organizing Your Writing, 2013).
How will you apply these skills to writing and research in other courses and future career?
