Writing Task #1: The Hiking Trip
The Hiking Trip is a story which the main character, Jeff is a very brave soul, risking his life to save his brother. However, in the beginning of the story, he tells his father he has no courage. As the story progresses the author indirectly reveals the characteristics and emotions of Jeff. Not only did he turn out to be a brave soul, but he was also very determined, smart (thoughtful) and caring, although his emotions come off worried/panicky and cowardly.
"This is hard on you, son, I know. But you have to come through with courage and a level head.. if not courage, fine; then have enough love for your brother to think this through," Jeff's father explains to him. This shows the fear Jeff has of risking his life until he has the flashback of how his brother had been bitten by a snake and how he desperately needs help. Therefore he overcame being a coward and began to hike himself out of the canyon to his brother's rescue.
Along the way, Jeff finds himself worried and panicking, thinking he isn't going to make it in time to save his 17yr old brother's life. He was constantly looking back and forth to see how far his father was behind, turns out a lot because his father because unlike his father telling him (Jeff) not to stop, the father did, every now and then. "Can't stop; Mark's in big trouble. Gotta keep going," is what Jeff constantly had to remind himself. When he made his way up and somewhat out of the canyon, he saw a vehicle heading his way and used his wit to run towards the truck sticking up his thumb (hitchhiking) to ask for a ride. Jeff explained the story of his determination to get ideas from Bill the truck driver, unfortunately Jeff blacks out.
When Jeff wakes up, he finds himself worried and panicky again shouting, "Where is Mark? Is he okay?" His father was also there with him in the motel room and assured him that Mark is going to be okay. "They airlifted him out and got him to the hospital... Thanks to you, son," Jeff's father explains to him. Because Jeff risked his to save Mark, his dad called him hero; adding on to the fact of him being caring. Jeff then asked how his father got out safely and was told that he was able to hitch with a fellow named Bob in a Tom Truck. "I guess Bob makes a good living going up and down that road..." Jeff laughed out loud.
In conclusion, Jeff's personally reveals that he is caring and determined; his emotions of being worried and brave pay off in the end. These characteristics off Jeff help him through the struggles and obstacles of risking his own to save his brother, Mark's life with the encouragement of his
