Heidi Roizen Vs. Keith Ferrazzi
Heidi was one of the few female power players in Silicon Valley at the time. She had started a very successful tech company, become an executive at Apple, and then went on to become a venture capitalist. She was friends with both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and was known to have one of the deepest, most extensive networks in the Valley.
* A rare personality who achieved mastery in building social capital.
* People like Heidi are called connectors.
* This skill was so distinct and valuable that they literally ran the world.
* She does not like the word networking. I prefer to say building a social framework because networking has always implied to me that you're going to get something out of somebody else, or that you're specifically going to create a tie. I look at it more as going out into the world to find other people with whom you can mutually improve your life. Compare this with Keith approach towards building networks - quintessential networker who took every opportunity to move and sake with powerful and successful people.
* Networking to Heidi is the right thing to do.
Lessons to both general ideas and concrete strategies from Hiedi:
* Ability to believe that you can make a change and that you can make something happen.
* Don't approach someone because you want something from them. Approach someone because you have something to offer.
* Think in terms of what value you'll be bringing to other people. Ultimately, that's why they're going to continue to connect with you.
* When you intend to form a relationship with someone, the first thing you should think is, What value am I to them?
* what do you bring to the table for that other person? What is the context of the relationship? What can you offer?
* Everyone has something to offer, but I think that people don't realize it, particularly those who are just starting out.
