Hardee Trasporation Case Study 5-1
I believe Jim will have to find a way to keep his customers and his drivers both well. Jim should have two drivers along board the truck so when one driver gets fatigue the other driver will be well rested to complete the deliver. Two drivers will improve the safety of the corporation which would decrease the accidents. The maximum hour’s truck driver’s drive is 11 hours driving, 14 hours “on duty” having two drivers on board one truck gives continuous travel for minimum delay of time for delivery. Since the drivers only drive 11 hours the Hardee transportation should have PUD terminals in an 11 hour radius.
A possible solution is hiring more drivers and establishing new dispatching facilities strategically placing the dispatch facilities and new drivers closer to Jim biggest customers. Hardees give the special attention to his best customer this would increase having the company’s ability to service those customers at the same times finding more customers means more cargo moved which increases the revenue of Jim’s company. Market penetration and potential will help determine the location of the terminals. Jim’s largest customer has the longest PUD times I believe to increase the pick-up and delivery (PUD) Jim can use bigger equipment like 5-axle tractor semi-trucks deliver and pick up more from companies with one trip.
Jim would have to ask the companies that take the longest to load to reduce the loading and unloading or the customer will have to face detention as well as additional charges. The sudden changes will create a conflict amongst the customers and the company The Hardee Transportation can create more terminal closer to the customer for better quality of service. The more terminals that are created the easier it would be for drivers to reach the customers. This would equal up to better customer service, better delivery rate, and make the customers want use the trucking service more from the company with the more satisfying service.
Elimination of intermediate handling can help the process, speeding up the handling process and customers will be able to get their package quicker with customers wanting packages shipped overnight and second day delivery not having break-bulk terminals gives the customer more direct access to the their packages which would breed more loyalty with the company and customers knowing that they would have direct access to their at all times. Jim can recognize the peddle runs around the customers PUD operating area that require drivers to bobtail. By doing this Hardees would be able to utilize the bobtails to haul other company cargo, servicing more and potentially finding new customers which would increase the revenue for the company. The carrying capacity can be decreased to enable more frequent trips carrying a lighter load will save on the diesel fuel and can convert to gasoline.
