Harassment/Teasing
Harassment is something many children and adolescents experience heavily at schools. Harassment is a "wide range behavior of offensive nature involves repeated physical, verbal or psychological attacks or intimidation directed against a victim who cannot properly defend him- or herself because of size or strength, or because the victim is outnumbered or less psychologically resilient" (Sampson, 2008). Harassment is prevalent in classrooms across America today. The offensive act should help be controlled by teachers and staff at the schools. As known, harassment can lead to students doing things that are very harsh and sometime landing them in jail. As a teacher, one should try their best to manage the classroom and listen to complaints given by the student.
Teachers just listening and observing could help the classroom. Classroom management is a big priority for a teacher. The harassing could make classroom management hard because the students feeling scared when they around the bullying. When people are in bad environments they tend not to work at their best. A child should be able to give their best especially when they are at a place that is preparing them for a better future.
The statistics of harassment are cruel for a person to hear because as adult one day that could be my child on that side of the fence being bullied. Students should feel that teachers and staff are there to help them in situations of harassment but many did not. Data shows that "66% of victims of bullying believed school professionals responded poorly to the bullying problems". In my eyesight, the bullying rate is a very high number. The number should be decreased drastically, because as trained professionals in education teachers and staff should be trained to deal with harassment. Schools across the nation should implement workshops before school starts showing employees how to deal with harassment.
Another puzzling fact is that religion and race still plays a part in bullying. In children, religion is based on their parent's belief so children really cannot decide. But unruly children harass their peers because of what they believe. According to the article, "25 percent of students victimized by bullying reported they were belittled about their race or religion". The color of your skin should not seem to matter today but it does. It is hard to tell children that a child someone does not like him or her because the color of their skin. Teachers and parents have to find ways to relay the message to the children. That is why parent-teacher relationships are a good way to help manage the students in various different aspects.
