The proud nation of guns

Barack Obama wants to reduce the gun violence that have been troubling the US for a long time. He wants to change the gun law with focus on gun sales, school safety and public health research. But how will the American people react to the proposals?

A flawed structure
you can take a trip to your local grocery store and buy milk, fruit, meat etc. and by the way, you can naturally buy a gun and some ammunition, which never should be on a grocery list. The number of guns in America are estimated to be 310,000,000 guns in total, which are owned by the civilians. America does also have a very high homicide rate. Out of 100,000 people, there is a homicide rate of 4.7 murders.[1]  This is a big problem and it have caused the new proposals on the gun control law to be under debate. Obama stated that he wants to decrease the killing bystating a limit on ammunition and doing background checks on people who are carrying weapons[2], this would make it easier to inform the law enforcement of potential threats before it is too late to react.

The proud people
The United States Constitution states that any American have the right to keep and bear arms.[3] The American culture have taken this right to the extreme, where we can see guns everywhere we look from the television to the grocery store. In addition, why wouldn’t the Americans be proud of their weapons? It is one of the fundamental values in America and helped to build their country. This is who the American people are and what made their country.

Un-American
The gun law is a hard law to change, every time there is a proposal to change the gun law a large group of people are against the proposal and start saying that it is “Un-American” because it conflict with what they feel are their basic values. But I think they are blinded by their patriotism and does not realise the harm the easy access to guns have on the country. The crime rates are increasing because of the how easy it is to acquire a gun. The guns are also harmful for our children, they see them in videogames and cartoons which can give them the impression of the guns to be more like toys instead of a lethal weapon. Rappers with their “tough guy” attitude and rebellious actions are becoming an extremely high influence to the youth. This is a problem because of the message they send, about the life on the streets shooting people. If the youth can get access to guns, what won’t they do with them?
In the US there is a high poverty and unemployment rate, this is a bad combination because people will do anything for wealth which often means a life of crime.
