This seems to be challenges for people with disabilities especially the blind and the deaf. The current circumstances raise the desire of our multi-functional product—Guide Set Pro. It is a smart guide stick together with a pair of special shoes.
The aim of this proposal is to promote the usage of Guide Set Pro and encourage mass production of Guide Set Pro. Guide Set Pro is invented in the needs of our target group in Hong Kong. Guide Set Pro can help them in encountering daily life constraints with safety, ease and relief.
The main benefits can be grouped up in the followings:
- Applicable, cost-effective, reliable guide set
- Safe and ease going out experience
- Familiar way in representing road changes
1.Introduction
Guide Set Pro provides our target group with a relatively new and practical method to solve the difficulties they faced in their daily lives. The concept of Guide Set Pro comes from different angles. Firstly, the service group is large. Secondly, there is no smart guide stick designed especially for Hong Kong. Lastly, those existing guide sticks have some limitation.
Hopefully, we will be the dominator in the market by introducing the popular practice in European state to Hong Kong. Our product will allow our target group to experience an extraordinary and pleasant time. Helping minorities is one of the big issues in our company’s corporate social responsibilities. Guide Set Pro is designed to cater for our target group in Hong Kong with uncertain road and pedestrian condition.
Actually, we all know that guide dog is the best measure. Nonetheless, guide dogs in Hong Kong are scarce resources. Singpao (2015) reported that there are only 30 guide dogs in Hong Kong. On the contrary, there are over 1700 people queuing up for a guide dog. The real phenomenon is that our target group cannot go out with good care, proper way and applicable tools.
2.Client Requirement
All the blind, the deaf and people with multiple disabilities are our market. Hong Kong Blind Union (2013) states that there are nearly 174,800 people are with visual impairment and 109,400 of them have multiple disabilities. The majority (97%) of people with visual impairment are 40 years old or above. Around 50% of them are single or divorced. Moreover, approximately 50% of them earn at least HKD $ 10000 or above. In this cluster, they are usually retired, living alone and wealthy with a certain amount of money saved via the whole career life. Inadequacy in present guide sticks and the long waiting time for a guide dog encourage them to search for a cost-effective, applicable and reliable alternative.
Difficulties—Dynamic road condition
The walking pace of people is very fast in Hong Kong. Roads and pedestrians are always crowded. Pedestrian ahead may even be narrowed or widened suddenly. For our target group, these kinds of living style and environment are challenges to them. The existing guide sticks in Hong Kong is not capable in helping them react faster and solving real life cases easier.
Difficulties—Limited guide dogs
There are only 30 guide dogs in Hong Kong. Although they come from England, they are scarce resources. The current development of guide dogs in Hong Kong is at the starting. As the proverb said, a slow remedy cannot meet an emergency. Therefore, our target group has to find an alternative to ensure them with safety and provide them with guidance.
Difficulties—Single-purpose guide stick
The popular guide sticks in Hong Kong are the traditional one. Users have to flip the guide stick to detect obstacles. They just have five-step range and single use. What’s more, traditional guide stick cannot sense obstacles around users or changes in road condition. So that users cannot predict distanced obstacles and draw a rough picture of the surroundings in their mind.
3.Proposed Solution
Guide Set Pro is a smart guide stick together with a pair of special shoes. Details will be in appendix. Guide Set Pro will be sold at $HKD 8,000. It will be sold on consignment in Hong Kong Blind Union and local stores already selling traditional guide sticks.
