Extra Credit A student must attended 90% class sessions to turn in extra credit. Plus, complete 90% of quizzes to turn in the extra credit report.
An extra credit assignment is available to student's worth up to 82 points. The assignment is to review an approved movie and write a paper 1400 to 1600 words long, single spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 point, Times New Roman font. The paper should show how the elements of the movie are related to material covered in class, the class textbook, and any outside sources needed to explain the psychological concepts of the movie. Students will want to demonstrate that they have a strong grasp of psychological concepts and how they are applied in the movie. There must be at least one referenced resource for the paper outside of your textbook (more is better). If a student quotes or substantially borrows another author's words then a citation must be used. Proper use of citing and referencing source material in accordance with the American Psychological Association (APA style) can be become quite complex. Students do not need to worry if they strictly follow all the nuances of APA style but a basic following is necessary. Most importantly, students are expected to avoid plagiarism. See APA style guidance paper in the extra credit folder for more details. Your textbook also uses a modified APA style.
Structure of the paper:
Students need to have a cover page (see example in APA guidance paper in extra credit folder). This does not count toward the papers word count.
The first paragraph (no longer than 500 words) should be used to outline the plot of the movie, introduce the main characters. Do not copy or slightly revise the jacket cover description.
The following paragraphs should detail how the movie is connected to the psychological concepts covered in class or textbook. Each major section of the paper should be devoted to one concept. Within each movie, two or even three concepts can be found. Within each major section the following should be found:
* What the psychological concept is (explain it in a summary form) and a short description of how it is portrayed in the movie (you can use more than one example but be careful not to overuse examples just to fill space).
* The movie's portrayal of the psychological concept as accurate/realistic, inaccurate/unrealistic and to what degree. Note: Most movies only partial portray psychological concepts accurately. How does the information you have learned validate or dispute the movie portrayal of the psychological concept (use this approach to support your statement on realistic or unrealistic.
* The final paragraph of the paper should be a summary of the main points and your conclusions (this is not to be found in each section).
