Greed
Greed is like cancer. It patiently lies dormant within us waiting for a potential catalyst such as envy or even pride to trigger its proliferation. Greed is pervasive and pertinacious. There is no limit to its insatiable appetite for more and more, regardless of the cost to our souls or quality of life. It isolates its victims by turning us against each other; ripping us apart from our friends, families, and destroying nations. Upon surrender, we become disoriented and blinded in our madness brought on by the covetous fever that consumes us. Consequently, we become numb and lose perspective of what really holds true meaning in life. We allow our greed to attack the rest of humanity like savage beasts devouring a carcass until there is nothing left. Our hideous transformation can only be seen by others who have not yet been infected. Our characters become weak, anxious, and insecure. Desperately, we try to fill the void by searching for solace and sustenance in endless hoarding and scavenging for material wealth. Greed enslaves us and turns us into repulsive creatures that are not worthy of being called human. In the end, our soul darkens and becomes like an infinite black hole in space that sucks up everything in its path. The only thing that greed gives is more greed. It feeds on the seeds of prosperity before they have a chance to grow and be shared.
Our only ally is hope. We must not relinquish our freedom. We must reclaim our sangfroid. Together we can fortify our arsenal with love, forgiveness, humility, and generosity. We owe it to ourselves, each other, and the future of mankind. After all, the essence of what it is to be human lies in our rudimentary ability to evolve, learn from our mistakes, and make ourselves better not only as individuals but as a whole.
