Will climate change affect the safety of the food supply to such an extent that it will cause an increase in human mortality?
Nowadays, one of the most discussing and disturbing problems in the world is global
warming. There are many concerns about climate change effects on different spheres
of our life. One of the most perturbing consequences that disturbing humanity is climate change
impact on safety of the food supplies and whether it will cause an increase in human mortality or
not. Some experts' opinion is that climate change will have a positive impact on safety of food
supplies, and will not be cause of food shortage in future. However, there is a possibility that the
effect of climate change on food supply safety will cause an increase in human mortality.
First reason why human mortality might increase is food shortage caused by floods and
drought, also food price ricing that will make food hardly available for people in some countries.
We all know that climate change entails increasing of temperature all over the world. Warmer
weather cause melting of glaciers and increasing of precipitation which in turn is cause of rising
of sea level. Frequent and abundant rainfalls along with sea level rising could be a reason for
floods that will damage crops in the floods' areas. Also, increased precipitation could cause
reduction and damage of crops, because not all plants can adapt to the weather with a high
humidity; many of plants will deteriorate or make fewer harvest. Besides, melting and
disappearing glaciers will be a cause of water shortage in regions whose rivers take their water
from ice melt. At first melting glaciers will be cause of floods, but then when they will
be nearly to disappearing it will be the reason of droughts, because rivers will not be able
to provide fields and cities with water. Another cause of droughts will certainly be temperature
rising. Lester R. Brown in his book "World on the Edge" says that crop ecologists believe that
temperature rise for each 1-degree-Celsius throughout the time of plants maturation is causing
10-persent decrease of cereal harvest (47). Thus, the temperature rising will be the cause
of yield reduction that will be drive of less food availability and price ricing. According to
Nanaimo Daily News (British Colombia), Liliana Hisas states that human death will increase
because of rising food cost and its less accessibility. Consequently there is a possibility that
human mortality will increase due to food shortage and its high prices.
Another reason of increasing human mortality is poor quality of food, and its contamination
from chemicals caused by climate change. There is some evidence that food quality is
decreasing, and food become "dangerous" for people. Scientists believe temperature rising and
hot weather make
