Genetically Modified Salmon

Consumers have increasingly become concerned with the company Aquabounty, and their efforts to genetically engineer salmon. GE or genetically engineered salmon is the first of it's kind, so Aquabounty is blazing a new path for a new market. No other animal has been genetically engineered, but competitiors are quickly testing other animals to modify. In fact, the University of Guelph swine research laboratory in Canada has developed the "Enviropig." This genetically modified pig is reportedly more "greener," emitting significantly less pollutants in their manure.
Blocking or discouraging GE animals is not the answer! Extensive research of GMO plants and animals has shown that these products have no adverse or negative effect on consumers. Aquabounty as well as competitors should be allowed to introduce safe products into the market place. All products should be required to bare the GE label, just like irradiated foods; so that consumers can make educated decision on what they consume.
Salmon is one of the most popular seafood items. Aquabounty is clearly adding value to the market. The purpose of any business is to maximize profits while minimizing operation costs and adding value to the industry. The efforts of new scientific endeavors should not be blocked, consumers should be given options; especially if they are beneficial to consumers or market. Moreover, GE salmon shows no signs of being nutritionally different than non-GE salmon.
Benefits & Risks:
The Aquabounty GE salmon benefits outweigh the risks. Currently the Salmon population is in danger. However Aquabounty's initiative will produce a majority of sterile female salmon and a small quantity will have the ability to breed. All salmon with the ability to produce will be confined to small pools, which limits the ability to escape into the wilderness.
The procurement of GE salmon is reportedly cheaper to consumers, which is beneficial in a declining economy. But may run the risk of harming fisheries that are already established.
Aquabounty reprepresentatives view GE labeling as a disadvantage, because of the lack of consumer acceptance. With that said, Aquabounty will have to do major PR work to educate consumers on the safety of such foods. I believe once consumers are aware of the safeness and beneficial aspects of foods, GE's will be accepted. However at this point consumers are too weary to indulge in these products, so it may be a while before Aquabounty receives return on investment. I believe scientist will continue to explore GE foods and these foods are ultimately our future.
