Work Teams
Don Ruiz, CEO of Gene One started the company with 4 other colleagues who had the necessary skill set to make the company succeed from the start.
These original 5 members brought key skills (Creativity, Finance, and Technology) to the company and worked toward making it succeed.
Now the goals are changing and it seems that the "team" is no longer sharing common goals or agendas. Some of resigned due to personal beliefs while others have hinted that they wish to be allowed to work in pure research only.
The concept of work teams seems to have escaped the management team to some extent even when the CEO arranged a 2-day offsite meeting to work as a team. The idea was to develop strategies and identify any issues. If the team had truly performed these tasks then the issues brought about later in the scenario would have not happened that late in the project.
While the team may have a common goal another concern for the team itself is how effective is it. Measuring the characteristics of each member and what activities they typically engage in then using peer evaluation to judge the outcome, as well as members desire to remain on the team. (Kozlowski, S.J., 2006) The start-up team effectiveness can be ruled successful as the company grew and expanded their market share. But the latest example of a team seems to lack effectiveness when looking at it from the outside. "Small number of people with complementing skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable." (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2004)
Team Viability
Angela Thomas became the first member of the team to voice and act on her willingness to contribute to the future of Gene One's success. Her statement illustrates her lack of belief and trust in the new direction of an IPO and setting time frames for research success. By removing herself from the equation she allows the company to move forward without the distraction of a dissenting voice who no longer believes in the company.
The next team member to voice concerns over willingness to contribute to the company in the future was Teri Robertson. This has to be concerning for the CEO as she was the one responsible for the company's initial success. "Team member satisfaction and continued willingness to contribute." (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2004)
