Gay Marriage

Gay marriage, is it really news? Overly publicized and ridiculously scrutinized, time and time again for ones decision to love another human being. The number of same sex individuals who what to join the sanctity of marriage has risen over the years. This decision to marry has brought out many perspectives from deontological ethics be them political and religious. My view on the subject is that of a utilitarianism view. I will view both sides of the discussion while also hitting on its relativism and ethical egoism part of the discussion.

Most deontological views or the moral view on the sanctity of marriage lies in what the bible teaches. The bible shares that woman was made from the bone of a man so that he would no longer be alone. Within this marriage the man and woman should come together by consummating the marriage and going on to procreate. Since procreation cannot be done between two men and two women then the view on marriage lies within the unity of a man and woman. This has been taught for generation after generation.

The bible also shares that there are three commonly held beliefs about what constitutes a marriage in the eyes of God. The first is that the couple must be married in the church or in the eyes of God. Second states that the marriage must be consummated through intercourse. And the third states that a wedding ceremony must be performed. But these things can also be accomplished in a same sex marriage.

My utilitarianism view on gay marriage is that every person in this world deserves to be happy. In my opinion a marriage should be a union between two or more people depending on your preference who love each other and want to share your life with. There are already too many marriages out there that are between a man and a woman that have lead to divorce. There are also a lot of single mothers out there who are now raising their children alone. With this being said I don't see why it's such an issue when two people of the same sex want to live together as a union.

Same sex couples want to get married for the same reason heterosexual couples want to marry. They marry to show the commitment that we have towards the other person. They marry to show that we want to be with that other person for the rest of our lives. When there is a marriage between a man and a woman there is a promise that they will be together for the rest of their life. And this is what same sex couples also want to share with each other.

The definition of marriage just like everything else in the world needs to be updated. Marriage should stand for a union, commitment, love, and respect that two people have towards each other and to be able to support each other while caring and protecting their family.
