Fresh Mart is a project that gives students opportunity to engage in real life businesses. Our group was assigned to conduct the Fresh Mart project on 13 October 2014 in front of Student Life Centre. In order to have an effective outcome, we have to apply proper management knowledge, that is- setting goals, establishes strategies and develops plans to attain the goals.

Planning is very vital in real life businesses. It involves setting the organization’s goal, establishing strategies to achieve the goals and develop plans using strategy to manage work activities (Robbins and Coulter 2012, p. 232). We set our goal through discussion for the Fresh Mart project was to sell all of the fruits and vegetables in the shortest time. By setting this goal, it provides us a clear direction of what we need to do to carry out right activities. Eventually, we sold all of our fruits and vegetables and earned about RM 900 as our net profit.

Planning also involves establishing strategies. It plays a vital role in our project as a good strategies can reduces uncertainty and minimizes waste and redundancy (Kausar, 2010). Before we ordered our fruits and vegetables, we analyzed our customers’ preference by researching from seniors group selling history and asked experienced lecturers for their suggestion. Besides, we also set a reasonable price that every student in campus is affordable and willing to buy from us.

In addition, plan is define as the documents that outline how goals are going to meet (Robbins and Coulter 2012, p. 233). Our group applied directional plans in the Fresh Mart project because we noticed that there are a lot of students were busy with their assignments or work. Instead of staying at the store waiting for the customers to come, we formed few mobile teams. They were responsible to sell those fruits and vegetables through out the whole campus and record them accordingly so that our accountants would not be confused. Besides, we faced surplus of fruits and vegetables at the end. Through directional plans, we decided to decrease in our price to attract more buyers and eventually we sold out all of our fruits and vegetables.
