Tradition is the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, from generation to generation, especially by word of mouth or by practice. The concept of traditions and customs are very important aspects of history. Without traditions and customs, the legacy of any institution would be very bland. Beginning in 1865, Florida State University has a long, storied history with its many traditions and customs that follow the course of the university. Without traditions and customs, FSU's morale and sense of community would be diminished.
Tradition builds character through knowledge of past generations and having a sense of purpose and pride. In my family, our traditions and customs are shown through our belief system and our heritage. Our Irish ancestry plays a big part in how I was raised and the values that have been passed down through the generations. Integrity, honesty, and responsibility are all values that were of great importance to my family and to myself as well. I believe that the past generations have influenced my family's values and helped to influence my character as well.
Florida State University's values have been influenced through years with the many traditions and customs like the Osceola and Renegade tradition at the beginning of each football game. Bill Durham, a 1965 graduate of FSU, envisioned the idea of Osceola and Renegade when he was a sophomore on the Homecoming Committee in 1962. The fact that this tradition has lasted so long shows how important tradition and customs are to FSU.
