Find a solution to end Global Warming

Abstract

Global warming is a problem we have been facing for quiet some time. It is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. Although, scientist are coming together to find a solution to this problem, they are not the only ones who are responsible for saving Earth. Due to the increase of human population, there is also an increase of natural resource consumption, increase of carbon dioxide production, and increase levels of various types of pollution. We must act quick to end global warming before the consequences prevent us from living on this earth comfortably. In this paper I will be discussing the different ways we can prevent global warming.

(intro)

Scientist have known about Global Warming for a few decades, and have been trying to find different solutions to this problem. Global warming is a change in the climate due to mainly pollution. Since global warming does not happen overnight, many seem to overlook the problem and refuse to make changes in their lifestyle in order to reduce this problem. We as habitants have a responsibility to be not only aware of the problem, but to also come together as citizens and find different solutions to global warming. I will try to discuss several ways we can reduce global warming and encourage the reader to make a conscious choice about reducing pollution and contribute to increasing our natural resources.

(Literature review) In order to prevent global warming, we need to understand what is the cause of it. One of the reasons we have been facing global warming is because of the non green house gases in our atmosphere. According to Hansen, (Hansen, 2000 pg 21) But we argue that rapid warming in recent decades has been driven mainly by non-Co2 greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as chlorofluorocarbons, CH4, and N2O, by the products of fossil fuel burning, CO2 and aerosols, the positive and negative climate forcing of which are partially offsetting (Hansen, 2000). Some of the ways we can reduce these harmful gases is changing some simple life styles. For instance, much of our produce is shipped or flown from distant countries, so to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, we can grow our own fruits and vegetables. Another change one can make in order to reduce these harmful gases is to use different products at home that are more environmental friendly. For instance, if you are planning to paint your house, you should use latex paint instead of oil-based. Latex paint smells better and releases fewer harmful fumes.

Furthermore, a way to improve energy efficiency and possibly develop no fossil energy sources is by buying appliances with the "Energy Star" label. These use less energy to do the same job, and it lowers your bills while using less fossil fuel. Lastly, change your home so that you reduce using heating and cooling appliances. You can change you windows by double glazing which are windows with two facing glass panels set in a frame. These windows are energy saving because they are made to improve insulation by maximizing the sun's warmth and reducing heating bills. It also maximizes keeping out the solar heat and reducing air conditioning. Another way of reducing heating bills is by adding outside shades in the summer to cool down your home. In addition, you can fill in the cracks with waterproof material and weather-strip your doorway and windows which will keep the warmth in your home during the winter. Finally, you can add insulation to your home which will drastically reduce heating and cooling expenses.

In order to reduce global warming we need to focus on air pollution, mainly aerosols, which are containers with gas under pressure, which have human health and ecological impacts. If the World Bank were to support investments in modern technology and air quality control in India and China, for example, the reductions in troposphere ozone and black carbon would not only improve local health and agricultural productivity but also benefit global climate and air quality (Hansen, 2000). We may not have a direct control to reduce these aerosols, but we can push our government to eliminate these harmful wastes. We can speak to our district representative and find ways we can support campaigns that are against air pollution. Furthermore, by keeping ourselves updated with these companies that are polluting our air, we can voice our concerns and possibly prevent these large companies from destroying our environment.

Studies show that global warming may cause less rainfall in areas where there is already a water deficiency. According to Zavaleta, " Global warming is expected to increase evapotranspiration, causing soil moisture declines that may offset modest increases in continental precipitation and lead to greater aridity in water-limited systems around the world" (Zavaleta, 2003 pg 12). These changes can been seen by analyzing the changes in the plants. "Several kinds of vegetation responses to warming, including changes in phenology, leaf area index, rooting depth, could influence evapotranspiration rates and soil moisture availability" (Zavaleta, 2003 pg 12 ). Phonology is the study of the relations between climate and biological phenomena, meaning that scientist can see a change in the structure of plants with the change in climate. These changes in the plant cause it to release moisture quicker than usual. In addition, these changes bring an imbalance of water moisture to our ecology. I can imagine this would affect a lot of living animals that depend on certain levels of moisture. To prevent further global warming, and preserve our water, we can take shorter showers. I remember going to camp high hill, and we needed to take a shower in less than 5 min. If we put a timer in the shower for 5 minutes, this would make us aware of the time we spend in the shower. Also, while we shower, we should use soap instead of shower gel. It pollutes a lot less. Furthermore, while in the shower, you should brush your teeth, this will keep you from brushing your teeth out of
