From this experiment I learned a lot about cells. The most interesting thing I learned was that a cell is selectively permeable. That means the cell will let in good materials in and it will not let in bad substances like bacteria.
For this egg experiment I used a simple egg that we use everyday to cook, bake, and do other things with. In this experiment I learned so much about cells and how they work, even if food dye is added to the normal egg. The most interesting thing I learned was that a cell is selectively permeable. That means the cell will let in good materials in and it will not let in bad substances like bacterias and other diseases that will harm the cell. When I put the egg in vinegar, the shell came slowly became to chip away and finally come off after days of waiting. The hard, white, outer protetive shell acted as the cell membrane. When I measured its circumference, it dropped significantly from one hundred and seventy three milimeters to eighty two millimeters. Next, since there was no longer any shell to protect the egg, the water went into the cell making it expand to 154mm. I think the blue food coloring had the greatest effect t on the egg. The blue food coloring went inside the egg making the inner and outer layers a bluish-gray. It even made the nucleus, the yolk, a weird blue color By this time, the egg was as smelly as dirty feet and as squishy as a gummy bear. The egg absorbed the salt water and orange juice making it expand a little more. This project was a great and fun way to see what goes through a cell each and every day.
