1.0 Defining suicide

Suicide is one of the moral issues that have a powerful impact on our life and one of the issues that is important and relevant to all of us. Suicide means killing oneself, an act constitutes a person willingly, perhaps ambivalently, taking his or her own life and it is a mysterious and disturbing phenomenon.

Is suicide a morality or an immorality behavior? Is suicide morally acceptable? Many would answer it is depends. As to the different religions, some believe that suicide is a silly behavior and serious crimes that strongly rejected. After all, commit suicide requires lot courage. Therefore, to some religions and societies suicide is a brave and honorable deed. One of the religious arguments rests on analogies concerning the relationship between God and humanity. We have no right to commit suicide and leave the world. We live are a test for us to develop morals and virtuous character in physical world.

To consider the morality of suicide, some cases in which death is a highly possible risk, an intention, and the question of intervention, psychopathology and autonomy it may probably bring into a further discussion.

There are 2 important philosophical traditions discussing the moral problem of suicide.

1. Reject Suicide

* An immoral act against either a transcendent order, or socio-political responsibilities, or the duties one has to obey with respect to your own individual life.

2. Specifically "Qualified" Suicide

* A morally good privilege of human freedom and self-determination

Considering that the available statistics on suicide are generally based on completed suicides rather than attempted suicides, the figures may not fully capture the risk of suicidal behaviours. Therefore, young people can be expected to be the group at highest risk of suicide in the future. Comparing the rates and trends of suicide between the Eastern and Western parts of the world, several key differences have been identified in the epidemiology of suicide. Firstly, suicide is the leading cause of death in Asian countries, whereas it is about the third or fourth cause of death in Western countries (WHO, 2010). This difference may be due to the use of more lethal suicide methods in Asia In Asian countries the suicide means chosen are more lethal in nature, such as jumping and poisoning via pesticide and charcoal burning. In Western countries, firearms are the most common means of suicide. In most countries, suicide rates are higher in males than in females. This also applies to the 15 to 19 year old age group, with about 10.5 suicides per 100,000 people for males and about 4.1 per 100,000 people for females.
