With the gas prices increasing and the fossil fuel that we are using to run our automobiles is starting to get lower and lower it seems like we need to find other alternatives to power our cars today. Not only will this save us money, but it will also help us lower the pollution that car smog causes and allow us to start helping out our planet instead of hindering it. By finding other solutions to powering our cars we will not only see an impact on our wallet, but also to the air we breathe every day.
For over a hundred years we have run our cars that we depend on to go back and forth from work, to school, to the grocery store and wherever else we decide to drive to on gasoline. Gasoline is one of the most widely used engine fuels, and gasoline is a blend of hydrocarbons with some contaminants including sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and certain metals (K. Demirbas, 2010, Par.2). Gasoline is a natural fossil fuel like oil or coal formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms (Turk, J., & Bensel, T. 2011, Chap.6.2, Par.2). This meaning we have to uncover it and locate it to be able to use it, but with our supplies of fossil fuel getting lower we have to use other methods in order to locate it. Other methods are directional drilling, horizontal drilling and also through 3-D seismic technology. By horizontal drilling we can get 10 times the amount of product and with the help of 3-d seismic it gives us a clearer picture of what lies beneath the surface and the ability to process huge amounts of data to produce three-dimensional seismic images that has significantly improved the drilling success rate (Turk, J., & Bensel, T. 2011, Chap.6.4, Par.5).
Another disadvantage towards are cars not being efficient is the amount of chemicals and smog we produce when driving down the road. This not only eats away at our ozone, but put's deadly chemicals in the air that if you get a strong dose of can become deadly. Some of these chemicals are carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, toxic gas when inhaled can reduces the volume of oxygen that enters the bloodstream and can slow reflexes, cause drowsiness, impair judgment and vision and even cause death and motor vehicles produce more than two-thirds of the man-made carbon monoxide in the atmosphere (Michael Copper, 2003, Par.5). Hydrocarbons are unburned fuel vapors that when hydrocarbons and other pollutants are exposed to sunlight, a chemical reaction occurs that produces ground-level ozone (smog), which is harmful to our health and the environment and vehicles are responsible for about 50 percent of the emissions that form ozone(Michael Copper, 2003, Par.6).
Cars should not only be more efficient, but also be powered by some other means of fuel to avoid more and more dangerous chemical being put out in our environment. There are several companies working on this project right now as we speak. The
