As an international student studying in abroad, it was an entirely new experience living in a new city. It was a whole new chapter in my life. It was not easy settling in to a city I barely knew. Firstly, I had to find a place where I could stay and also suit my budget. Secondly, I had to shop for my own groceries and other items to fit in to my new home. There are many websites all over the Internet where an average person could find a place to stay. However, not all of them are catered for students on a tight budget. As such, for this report, I would propose two ideas that would help international and local students to have a smooth transition from moving out of home to living on their own.
My first proposal would be to start a new website that allows students to find an accommodation. There are many websites online available to the general public that allows tenants and sellers to rent or sell their property. However, these sites directed to the general public. My proposal would be to create an entirely new site that is catered to students. This site would allow international and local students to locate an accommodation without the hassle of actually being at the site of the accommodation to check it. As an international student, not knowing anything about Melbourne at all when I first arrived, it was fairly difficult to find an accommodation that would fit my budget that was close to the university and also the public transport. The site that I'm proposing to set up would allow tenants to rent a shared accommodation or the entire unit. As different students may have different budget set in mind, the site would allow students the option or choice to select among the categories.
For those who would like a more direct approach to finding an suitable accommodation for themselves, I would propose to open outlets in major cities around Australia which would be situated at centralized places such as Melbourne Central and Central in Sydney. This would allow students who have just arrived with no Internet access to use this facility to get some help. Besides helping students to find an accommodation, this facility would also help students with purchasing furniture for their unfurnished accommodation.
As international students come and go, students leaving Australia can sell their furniture on this site. Much like Gumtree, students can set up a profile in the website and sell their used furniture. The site would also facilitate bulk or packages purchases where packages of furniture such as a refrigerator, washing machine and other home appliances would be sold at a lower price. We would also provide logistics for a competitive fee for moving items from one place to another. Retailers such as Big W or The Good Guys Company would also be welcomed to open a corporate profile on the website where they will be able to sell their products at a special rate available only to students.
