The course titled Employment Law has enlightened my thoughts and reasons why companies and employees react the way that they do in a given situations. Professor Olson was given the task of teaching this class; he utilized the entire time to provide students with an eye opener as to the different types of employment law that are still relevant today in Miami-Dade and Broward County, where many of the students reside. One of the assignments was for students to bring in weekly articles related to employment law. I have learned from these articles how companies are ill-advised when it comes to laws. The disregard of certain illegal activity that's allowed to go on within the organization. It is amazing how behavior can be tolerated given the consequences of their actions. Higher management or persons in authority do not think twice how their action or lack of will affect them or the companies they represent. One particular article from the Miami New Times dated May 2012 was in reference to a Fort Lauderdale Yacht Company accused of discrimination.
It seems that an internal e-mail was sent in error to the employee referred to in the e-mail. The content of the e-mail openly exposed discrimination. There were several other articles related to cases out of Broward County and that was an eye opener for me, being that I work within the county. Professor Olson also talked about the rights of employees and what employers should be doing to comply with Federal, State, and local laws. I was not sure what to expect from this class, so I only leased the text book. I learned so much that I personally felt the eight weeks given to complete this course was not long enough given the content that needed to be covered. I have decided to turn my leased book into a buy so that I can use it as a reference because as long as I am employed for a company or decide to run a company. There will always be a need for employment law.
