Dwight Okita and Sandra Cisneros were influenced by american culture in many ways. Though they convey it in different ways . The speakers have strong roots in foreign cultures but are more connected to their american identities. They both speak on the topic of American identity.
Okitas poem shows how you experience culture rather with where your family came from. you can see she's affected because her best friend is a white girl. She's affected by her friend because her culture is different than her friends. Through the letter, you can see she is overwhelmed by american culture.
Both show that heritage and how you look doesnt determine what it means to be American. Both stories reference american stereotypes.
Cisneros Talks about her mom calling americans ways barbaric.'Mericans use american words ( auntie , uncle) and talks about things that happen inside america. Her grandma has strong mexican roots but americans judge the narrators looks. Cisneros uses images and idead to get her point across. Like when she calls her grandma "awful" and seems to not believe in her strict religious view. Cisneros talks about standing outside the church which represents being an outsider to mexican culture even though she is mexican. The little girl in the story also sees herself as part of the american world because she states activities that an American would do with her friend, Denise. For example, her and her friend watch boys together.
