The Articles of Confederation were created on November 15, 1777 and ratified on March 1st, 1781. It was an agreement among the 13 founding states that established the United States of America that reflected both the ideals and philosophies of the American revolution and highlighted the difficulties of a democratic government. Although the purpose was to have a plan of confederacy that secured the freedom and and independance of the United States, the Articles were too weak for an effective government.
A confederacy is is a form of government in which independent states are loosely joined, and maintain the power over the majority of their own affairs. The idea of a confederacy did not work for the Articles of Confederation because they gave the states too much power and not enough power to the federal government. The states acted as separate nations while expecting the federal government to handle everything. The federal government was expected to pay the army but had no means to do so. This one reason why the Articles were considered weak.
The Articles of confederation were not unsuccessful because of bad laws, they were unsuccessful because they they didn't have proper enforcement and the laws operated on the states instead of directly on the people. If George washington needed more troops at the time, the only way for him to receive them would be to ask the states. If any of the states did not want to provide troops, they didn't because it wasn't required and there was nothing the government could do.
The weakness in the government caused for an unstable economy. The congress was powerless to demand taxes so they had no funding to pay for anything, such as the extreme damages and debt left by the war. Maintaining an army or navy was also close to impossible without having any way to pay for them. The main problem people had was the way congress had to accept the debt. The Articles of Confederation did not give the government the right to control trade, which is something that the states relied on as a source of revenue. This made it difficult for any american merchants due to the fact that they couldn't impose taxes on any goods.
The Articles of Confederation were created because of a need for unity among the new states but ended up causing many problems for america. It created an unstable economy and a huge debt left by the war that could not be fixed because of the lack of power the government had.
