This topic will elaborate three main aspects of discussions. The first aspect is the detail and conceptual framework of the Multimedia Cognitive Theory. The second aspect focuses on the central claims of the important aspects of meaning making with digital texts compare with language, and the third aspect is the key trends of technologies in education in the near future and how are these trends affecting the contemporary meaning making with digital texts. These aspects play an indispensible part in getting the message across.
The discussions include claims tabled in literature, the researcher's critical views and how are these views defended by literature. These claims underpin the theories used in the current research. There are four sources of literature in this topic. These sources draw the attentions to different aspects of digital practices.
4.2 The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning
There are several theories from this book where this research is based.
4.2.1 Implication of Cognitive Load Theory for Multimedia Learning
Long-term memory has a large capacity to store information. Almost all human cognitive activities are determined here. Information held in human long-term memory must be learnt over a long period of time. When something is learnt, there will be an alteration in long-term memory.
When we process information, all information will interact with working memory. When interact with novel information, working memory has no choice but to randomly try and test for effectiveness. It is likely to be slow, a long and ineffective procedure for acquiring new knowledge. When knowledge is available at the moment of acquiring new knowledge, either from another person or from long- term memory, it will be used. However, working memory has it limitations. It can only hold about seven elements of information. And at any moment, it can only process 2-4 elements. Beside the limited capacity of working memory, the duration for it to keep any elements of information is short. It will disappear in less than 20 seconds if without rehearsal.
