Destroying Avalon is a novel based on the social lives of teenagers. In the olden days bullying are happening in a lot of ways. In the world today bullying occurs through cyber space. A world where you cannot see your enemy, instead you are behind a computer screen. Destroying Avalon is written by Kate McCaffrey. Teenagers in Destroying Avalon are obsessed to trying to fit in, being popular and bullying.
Avalon is the main character in the novel. She is obsessed to fit in and to meet and make new friends. Once she comes to the school she is introduced to a polite and seemingly innocent school girl, 'Alice'. On the social side of things Alice is a kind of girl who will do whatever it takes to fit into the popular crowd. Teenagers today have a lot of similarities with Alice. Avalon's bullying is thought to be started off by Alice. Once the bullying begins she finds a place with the outcasts. Marshall, Sukey, Tamara. Avalon knows that Sukey was the person who had started the online bullying campaign. Sukey was Avalon's first real friend in the book; things began to change without once Sukey was becoming jealous of Marshall and Avalon's friendship. Teenagers today can be represented as Sukey by being jealous and insecure and then making other peoples life misery just to satisfy her own. Avalon is represented in the book as an innocent country girl who has an uncontrollable urge to know every piece of detail about what people are saying about her. In the novel, Avalon is targeted and picked on for speaking her mind and freely discussing intelligent opinions in her classes. Most children today are very self-conscious about speaking and committing to discussion at school, this is mainly caused by bullies and irresponsible teens. Once this occurs it is interrupting with the education of teenagers who are eager to learn. During Avalon's first day Caleb instantly becomes a class friend. Caleb is the stereotypical surfing guy, he is nice, caring and accepting of Avalon's situation. Caleb is represented in the novel as likeable, compassionate and someone who judges a book by its content not by its cover. Once Avalon joins the new surrounding of her school she immediately realises that there is a big change in values and morals. At Avalon's home her parents are very strict and support her continuously to thrive for excellence. The novel 'Destroying Avalon' is very realistic and has a large number of similarities of how teenagers are represented today. A lot of teenagers can relate to the characters in the book. Avalon eventually becomes very close friends with Marshall. Marshall is a kind, accepting teenage male towards Avalon. Marshall in the novel is confused but at the same time accepting of his sexuality. Throughout the friendship Marshall is constantly there helping and giving advice to Avalon through her bullying.
