In the United States, there is an estimate of 15 million people affected by depression. It is so universally spread that depression is sometimes called "the common cold of mental illness." It is one of the most curable mental diseases that sufferers seemed to mark huge improvement after a single session of therapy. However, 30 percent of patients seek for expert help. The pain endured by untreated depression sufferers is also felt by society as a whole. As specified by the government, it costs the nation 27 billion dollars a year for depression mainly in lower productivity level and being jobless. Regardless of the problems, researchers tend to be aware of making advancement in understanding the disease and are searching more ways to cure depression. Depression is one of the most widespread illnesses caused by many factors such as physical illness, financial distress, and death of a loved one.
Depression takes place at least once in the lifetime but most people go through depression when they are physically ill. Not being able to endure pain is very depressive, despite some people have low pain tolerance. When abilities are taken away, you have to go through grieving process where there is the higher chance of being lead to depression. Dr. Nathan Billig, director of the geriatric psychiatry program at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, mentions that depression in older adults "is compounded by the fact that it is one of the great masqueraders of medicine. Depression in older adults, unlike in younger people, frequently first shows itself as a physical problem -- headaches, low back pain, chest symptoms, bowel disturbances -- and may not be thought of as a primary problem to be treated." Elder aged over 65 think that it is normal to get depressed as they grow older. Furthermore, there are some memories in people's lives that must have been very depressive. According to Billig, the stress from the past can come back and negatively affect our mental state, causing a higher chance of getting depression.
The second leading cause of depression is financial distress. The thoughts of not being able to provide for the kids or losing a job is a big issue that could happen in a person's lives. However, there are many ways to prevent depression over debt. When someone is really depressed, you could be the one who can help someone financially. The lack of confidence and motivation in depression may lead to an inability to solve the problem and it may also be tough to address the financial issue. Even if financial distress is caused by losing a job or any other specific event, psychiatrist David Reiss of Rancho Santa Fe, California, inform that there are some triggers that can lead someone with stress to depression.
