India is one of the fastest developing countries, tragically has one of the lowest child sex ratios in
the world. The existence of a girl child is constantly governed by traditions and rituals of the society.
Though many laws have been enforced, rate of female foeticides are very high. Social awareness and
education are the only weapons against this evil. Through a survey we have tried to understand the
mindset of the people which is leading to this declining ratio. Answerers' status, gender, occupation,
education details were kept in mind. The poor scenario of discarded female foetuses in our country is a result of the mindset of the people.
Until the citizens of India themselves feel the need to curb this evil, such practices will continue
to take place. The society is supposed to be the lifeline of the residents. It is shame then, that in a
developing country, such norms of the society itself endangered the very existence of the female child
in India. A mindset revolution is needed which will make people realize the importance of the girl
child. People and the administration have to work hand in hand to make this possible. The survey was done in 15 villages of Mehsana Taluka. A questionnaire was prepared, which was
filled by people belonging to different sections of the society. A total of 130 questionnaires were
filled by a group of 20 students. It was a challenging task to convince the people to answer the
questionnaire. Conversing with the villagers in the local language, understanding their point of view
helped us convince them. Data collection and analysis were done and conclusions were drawn.
