The Huffman Trucking Company is a national freight carrier and has grown to do business internationally. With the positive growth in revenue and in employees, the company is calling on the virtual organization team to help with revamping there information system across four states. This company was established in 1936 with just a single tractor rig and today the company has grown to over 1300 employees, 800 tractors and 2100 trailers. The company is located in "Los Angeles California, St. Louis Missouri, Bayonne New Jersey, and Cleveland Ohio" (University of Phoenix, 2005).
Due to the consistent growth over the years the company has remained privately held and their primary contracts are the "U.S. government, automotive parts suppliers, electronic consumer products, raw materials for manufacturers of plastic product" (University of Phoenix, 2005).
Management has looked at the lack of the company's information systems infrastructure and realized that they are in need of a systems upgrade to stay competitive in this market. The virtual organization team has come in and looked at the infrastructure that they now have, and concluded that they are in dire need of this upgrade.
Even though Huffman's Trucking Company network has different operating systems there mostly windows based. Windows NT, SP, 98, 95, XP, 2000 Professional. The St. Louis Missouri office has both windows based and Macintosh (University of Phoenix, 2005).
The operating systems used were needed to provide good communication and routing services to be able to run the business, and with the company's rapid growth over the years is why so many different operating systems are in use. Windows 9.x and 3.x is an out dated operating system that Microsoft has stopped using in 2008. There may be some security problems now because the California and New Jersey offices has no firewall in place; so the virtual team need to look at the possible hackers, worms and viruses.
The Huffman Trucking offices emails are on Lotus Notes that was created in 1989. If Huffman's Trucking Company wants to go global it needs to use Microsoft Exchange in order to expand the business. With using the Microsoft Exchange throughout the four offices it will allow employees to receive the information on the road and also stay up to date with their deliveries and invoices.
This is where the Virtual Organization Team will come in and help revamp the company's like Huffman's trucking to improve better and expand their business by upgrading it throughout.
