One of the first philosophies followed by corrections is Retribution. This model refers to the thought that if you break the law then you deserve to be punished. The idea is that a person must pay a price for violating society's norms. It is also based on the concept of an "eye for an eye". Because the theory of retribution is just a way for society to take out its revenge and give the offender just desserts it is not adequate enough to stand alone. Retribution would need to be acknowledged that every punishment a fine, probation or prison has some feature of retribution. Because every punishment, fines to prison in some way reflects retribution, retribution will not fit into the ultimate goal to reduce recidivisms and crime rate. Retribution is just another way for society to get back at a criminal in revenge even though the criminal does deserve it this will not work in keeping corrections population down.
Deterrence is a theory founded on that an individual makes rational choices when they make the decision to commit a crime. With this theory an individual who is faced with any decision will look at the various options available and the potential consequences of each of these options. After the individual examines what the reward or what the consequence may be of their actions they will then act on the situation in a way that suits them regardless of the positive or negative outcome. The consequence of arrest and a criminal punishment does not always affect the offender; instead the offender also looks at the likelihood of being caught and the most likely punishment that may occur if he or she is convicted. The theory of deterrence has the potential to back fire and not work in the criminal justice system. If the individual decides the likelihood of getting caught in a criminal act or slim or they feel the most likely punishment they will receive is not significant then there is no deterrence and the crime will be committed. Deterrence has become known as the concept that criminal activity can be controlled by creating an environment where the individual will not commit a crime because the perceived punishment. Because of all these issues deterrence is not an effective way to reduce crime or recidivism.
Incapacitation is another philosophy that has been used and proven not works in the future. Incapacitation is based on the idea that it is possible to make someone physically impossible for them to commit a crime. Typically incapacitation is done through incarceration in a prison or jail but the ultimate way of incapacitation is the death penalty. Incapacitation is defines as a strategy for crime control involves the physical isolation of an offender from the community, usually through imprisonment, to prevent the offender from committing further crimes( Visher, C.
