There are some different types of operating systems avalible, each one with their very own benefits. But not every OS is easy to handle or has the features included, some users need. So to point out the different aspects today I will compare two commonly used operating systems, namly Mac OS and Linux. One of them is the programmers favorite, the other is known as the most user friendly OS. Beginning with the technical aspects, showing both have some things in common, we will take a look at the different features, finally leading to the usability of both operating systems. In the end I will point out why Mac OS is better for normal users whereas Linux is best for programmers.

Focussing on the technical features, both operating systems are based on the Unix OS. But where Linux is an open source programm, able to run on nearly every type of Hardware, Mac OS is designed to only work on Apple Hardware. Although if you buy one version of the Mac OS, you can run it on as many apple devices as you like, using your Apple ID. But in contrast to Linux, Apples source code for their Mac OS is a highly protected secret. The Linux source code is free avalible and customizable, that's the reason there are many different versions of the Linux OS. Some of them are commandline-based, whereas others already have a graphical user interface (GUI). The commandline-based versions are not very user friendly, but give the user many possibilities to control the system. Mac OS runs only on a GUI where the usage of the system is pretty intuitive. Therefore nearly everyone is able to use it and the features that come within.

Maybe one of the biggest advantages of Linux is it's free. But because many users help improving it, the GUI based versions are pretty good to handle and have a nice design. Never less, Linux is commonly used as a server operating system. Also hackers love Linux, because it allows you to do things that are impossible to do under Mac OS. System developers benefit from the features under Linux as well as other programmers. Other operating systems have too many security restrictions that prevent the user from taking damage from viruses and malware but also from doing illegal things or modifying the OS. There's a variety of many distribution kits available for Linux, all of them with different features.

Mac OS on the other hand comes with memory-protection as well as pre-emptive multitasking. It has symmetric multiprocessing support and a Quartz graphics engine. Advanced-PDF, OpenGL and Quicktime are supported by default. If you have other Apple devices you can connect them with your Apple-ID and share your data and Apps. Furthermore Apple keeps improving the features of Mac OS and the design of the GUI. You can have up to 8 concurrent screens which you can switch by one click, a big benefit for small displays. Apple offers you backup software called timemachine for automatically backing up your whole system in regular
