There are many antivirus and personal firewall options available on the market today. We will be looking at a few of the most popular products, according to a poll conducted by Matousec.com.
Receiving 32.62 percent of the vote is the Comodo family from Comodo Security Solutions, Inc. The Zone Alarm family, from Check Point Technologies, Ltd., came in second with 24.33 percent of the vote followed by the Outpost family from Agnitum Ltd. with 10.47 percent of the vote.
Comodo offers a suite containing both a firewall and an antivirus in a single product, Comodo Internet Security PRO 2011 which includes support and internet security for three computers for four different pricing plans. One month of the service is $4.95, one year $49.99, two years $84.98, or three years of service is offered at $119.98 for the personal user. There is a free trial of 30 days offered with this product as well. Comodo offers solutions for the corporate environment as well, however this Internet Security PRO is designed for the home user. The service is designed to run on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 the Windows Server versions of 2003 and 2008. There are 32 bit and 64 bit applications available. As of this writing, 1905 users gave Comodo Internet Security PRO 2011 an average rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars on the website http://download.cnet.com.
Zone Labs offers several internet security products including one product that is solely for firewall protection, Zone Alarm PRO Firewall, which costs the same price as their Zone Alarm Antivirus + Firewall, $29.95 for one year of protection for up to three pc's. They do not have any software available for any of the Windows Server versions, only Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 in both 32 and 64 bit applications. There is a free version of the firewall that is available, however as a result of tests applied by matousec.com, it is not recommended as it scored very low scores. Zone Alarm Extreme Security offers the most protection of any of the company's application suites with pc security, web security, identity theft and data protection, and family protection components offered for $44.95 per year for up to three pc's. User ratings of the free firewall seem to be higher than ratings given by matousec.com, with an average 3.5 stars out of 5 on CNet's Download.com. Extreme Security received an average user rating of 6.7 out of 10 according to CNet.
The third family we will look at will be the Outpost products from Agnitum Ltd. Outpost products are offered for home and business use as well. We will discuss a few of the options available, beginning with Outpost Firewall Pro. Firewall Pro is offered for the home user on a single pc for one year of service for $19.95 or for a lifetime service of $29.95. For three computers the cost increases to $39.95 and $49.95 respectively, with other offers for even more protected computers.
