My community service project is mainly based on working at Jackson Memorial Hospital in the Mother - Baby care unit, also known as the Holtz Children's Center. My position is formally known as a "Candy Striper" which is considered a teenage volunteer worker at a hospital. During this project, my main activities included assisting mothers after labor, feeding newborn babies, and transporting blood specimens. In addition, learning telephone etiquettes and volunteer scripting were also a part of my main activities that I have encountered as a result from this project. Basically the steps I took to plan, implement, and complete my project included "Jackson Memorial Hospital's Standards of Excellence". Some of these standards included using ethical behavior, professional telephone etiquette, acknowledging others, being responsive and responsible, and ensuring confidentiality and privacy. Overall, I have completed over 150 volunteer hours yearly between the times of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm; which have met over the requirement of completing all aspects of my project.
Moreover, there were not any problems that occurred during my project. However, I do believe that my project had an impact on the individuals who received my service. Providing service excellence to patients and enhancing the hospital's efforts by complementing and supplementing the hospital's staff are what I believe my project had the most impact on. And last but not least, the most important thing that I've learned while completing this project is that the most gratifying thing in life is to have been able to give a large part of oneself to others. All in all, my community service project builds the health of the community by providing a single, high standard of quality care for all of the residents of Miami - Dade County.
