The Cold War: The Korean War 1940s-1950s

• Japan surrendered to the Americans in 1945, Koreans were left to pick up the pieces
• Temporary boarder near the 38th parallel set by the United Nations
• North Korea established a communist government
• South Korea established a democratic government
• June of 1950, communist North Korea crossed the 38th parallel

Rationale: Domino Theory

• The belief that communist states would spread in not stopped
• Unites States argued in favor of entering the war and help South Korea

• U.N immediately sent troops to help South Korea, led by General Douglas MacArthur
• MacArthur’s forces pushed back the North Koreans
• China, warned U.N forces to come hither
• McArthur did not heed the warning, and the PRC joined the war effort as allies with North Korea
• Chinese sent hundreds of thousands
• Two sides were soon locked in a struggle near the original 38th parallel boarder
