Yes, I do believe that civil disobedience has been effective in changing the law over the past years. One of the most famous civil disobedience cases would be the Rodney King case. Rodney king was an African American who was a construction worker, and although Rodney King was on parole for robbery, he became famously known after experiencing a beaten by the Los Angeles police officers following a high-speed car chase on March 3, 1991. He received a badly beating, and this made major headlines around the world, taken into consideration how police officers treat offenders when questioned on a traffic violation, a crime committed, or a witness to a situation. Because of this incident it has brought awareness the police brutality that occurs within the community. Under no circumstances, anyone should suffer from police brutality, if an officer's life is in danger, use force but not to the point where severe brutality may occur. Based on these types of incidents, any law enforcement officer, who uses police brutality, without a proper cause, is automatically grounds of termination. Citizens, who suffered police brutality, have the right to file a complaint, and start an investigation against the officers and the police department. Citizens, who have taken a stand, have made a difference on how police officers should treat everyone.
A law I would consider changing would be DUI, offenses. This law often gives offenders, second chances because it may be their first DUI offense, and I do not agree with that. DUI is a serious offense, and at times, offenders receive many options, before considering jail time and prosecution. For instance, for first offense they may offer community service, a fine, and attend an alcohol class to ensure one the dangers of drinking and driving. If an offender who is charge with a DUI, they should automatically receive a 30-day sentence jail term, to teach that drinking and driving is not safe, and it may cause serious harm to others and to self. This charge should pertain to everyone, including celebrities because they often get away and get bailed out right away. If celebrity offenders receive jail time as their sentence, they should not release the celebrity offender within a couple of days or even hours because of jails overcrowdings. Celebrity or non-celebrity, one who commits a crime, big, or small should pay the ultimate price for their crime and charge to the fullest extent of the law.
