My project is about the mental, social and psychological effects of parents leaving their children in search of a better living. What I have decided to do for my project is to participate in a day of work with a parent who have migrated to New York and left her children and family back home in order to provide a better life for them. In my project I will get to observe the different duties involve in this parents work, how many hours of work she does, how she gets paid, how much money is going back to her home country and most importantly, how has her migration to New York affected her children's up bringing as a whole. On March 1st, I will be able to actively take part in this parents job as a nanny in Tribeca . On that day I will be given an opportunity to put myself in her shows where I will take part and observe what her job as a nanny is really like. My guiding topic is Making A Living On Planet Earth and the course ethnography which I will use for comparison is The Dobe Ju/'Hoansi. I am interested in this topic because I have personally experienced what it's like to have a parent make such a huge sacrifice in order for their families to have a better life and I am also curious to find out the different implications this has had on other families who have gone through the same experiences.
