Case Study Flight 001
1. According to Maslow's theory, "people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs (Cherry, 2012)." That being said, an individual needs motivation to complete and accomplish certain tasks. Without this motivation, for example, bonuses or another type of reward, it is possible that the individual will not provide satisfactory outcomes. This may also lead to higher turnover rates since there would not be anything to work towards certain fullfilments. With Amanda's example, she was literally told that she was just a number and that she could easily be replaced. That being said, she did not feel motivated enough to stay with this company and went to one where she felt she mattered. One way to meet the needs of company is to motivate the employee by making the individual feel needed and important to the organization.
2. The Expectancy Theory is "faith that better efforts will result in better performance. Expectancy is influenced by factors such as possession of appropriate skills for performing the job, availability of right resources, availability of crucial information and getting the required support for completing the job (2012)." If an individual is feeling underpaid, then it will be up to the organization to make the position(s) rewarding in other ways. Such as promotion within the organization and other kinds of recognition in the company. New challenges can motivate an individual so that new fulfillments can be accomplished for career enhancement. One of the implications of the Expectancy Theory is that "the deserving employees must be rewarded for their exceptional performance."
3. Base on Herzberg's theory of the Two Factor Theory. The theory is based on two factors such as the hygiene factor and motivator factor. The Hygiene factor is "based on the need for a business to avoid unpleasantness at work (2012)." Motivator Factors "are based on an individual's need for personal growth. When they exist, motivator factors actively create job satisfaction. If they are effective, then they can motivate an individual to achieve above-average performance and effort (2012)." In Flight 001's case, the employees are satisfied at work because their sense of true involvement at the company. They feel that their contribution affects the company and there is a sense of ownership with the company. Also, there is an open door policy at the organization. The employees can talk to the CEO as easily as being able to talk to a co-worker making the employee feel important to the company. The quality of inter-personal relationship is a hygiene factor. Challenging and stimulating working conditions like in the Flight video provides are motivator factors that keep the employee wanting to achieve success.
