Why I Am Here
I am here to graduate on time and to still compete athletically. This semester I transferred from Virginia Tech. I spent two years in the business school and wrestling there and was not on the right track. In my situation I would not have been successful in either of those two aspects. I realized that it was time for a change and get my priorities straight. Here, at John Carroll I believe I will do much better in both areas.
Division I sports is a full time job and demands a great deal and effort to become successful. The NCAA has made it very difficult with Title IX, an athletic based law for gender equality, for many non-profit sports to survive. Div. I wrestling currently only has 80 teams remaining with a maximum of 9.9 scholarships, and this has driven the competition to very high standards. I was only a recruited walk-on so it would require even more effort if I was ever going to start. I began skipping classes for extra workouts with a coach or even to rest before a practice. All of the time I should have devoted to school was directed either at wrestling or my social life. My grades began to slip further than they ever had in my entire life. After the first semester of my second year it came time to decide if my grades were worth the slim possibility of ever starting. After meeting with my coaches I decided that I would succeed greater at a smaller school, even though I really enjoyed the school I was at.
At John Carroll I can truly focus on my academics and still compete athletically. John Carroll is a Div. III school which will allow me to compete at a high level and be successful. Also it is a great place to earn a degree and will benefit my future. I believe that this university gives me the best opportunity to succeed in my college life.
