Based on our previous project, BIM is one of the techniques that has been used to manage the construction processes. BIM works in multiple dimensions from 2 dimension to N dimensions, however we are only focusing on 2D to 5D today. 2D BIM can help planning, elevating, sectioning, and detailing drawings using AutoCAD to design and visualise building form. Using the 2D drawings, 3D BIM can create virtual model of their building components, while performing a clash analysis to evaluate the design error. 4D MIB added a capability to assign the time element. 4D BIM can simulate the construction by showing the time-line from start to end which can helping with planning the construction sequences. 5D BIM adds cost to the element which makes the construction become more predictable.

These are the benefits of BIM. BIM aid the collaboration between different disciplines within an organisation. It simulates the construction sequence and visualise the building(s) even before any construction has taken place. It can also help with resolving the conflict between all architectural designs for example resolving the MEP clashes. These benefits can help with the efficiency of designing and construction a building.

Now I am going to talk about the workflow of each BIM in more detail.
2D drawings are firstly translated into 3D using BIM software for visualisation, which can help various disciplines to resolve any clashes on the design.

By integrating the 3D model and entering the duration of each task(s) into the BIM software, 4D BIM can generate the planned flow line. However, in a reality, the project may be delayed. So, by entering the actual time line and comparing the actual and planned flow line, 4D BIM can measure the productivity and hence calculate the forecast schedule. In addition, by comparing the the planned flow line and forecast schedule, the total period delayed can be analysed.

5D BIM is used to predict the whole building cost. With 3D models and cost breakdown structure database, 5D BIM can yield better estimate and budgets needed to deliver the building. This can reduce error as well as time needed for measurement. It is important to note that the database has to fulfil the HKSMM4 methodology.
Conclusion
Benefits of BIM are clear to us. It is a way for architects and different disciplines to communicate a building design, to deliver improved quality, predictability of cost and schedule. Hence, BIM is one of the best programs that can manage the process of developing a building from its initial stage to the final stage thoroughly.
