Chapter 1
The night was a cool blanket over the earth. Crickets chirped, owls hooted, people snored, and in the distance I could faintly hear the sound of animals nesting. The stars above me looked like a thousand beautiful pairs of eyes watching me, keeping me safe. The ground under me was soft, thanks to a patch of thick grass, and I slowly closed my eyes and drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep.
The sound of water rushing awoke me. It sounded close. I licked my lips slowly as my stomach grumbled. I could do with some water and an apple, a fat, juicy, green apple. I slowly turned and cracked my back, then I finally opened my eyes to reveal a beautiful, lush, green forest around me. Smiling, I got up, grabbed my backpack, which served as a good pillow, and headed to the sound of the hopefully cold water.
I'm so mad at everyone. If they just listened to me, listened to what I saw and heard, then they wouldn't be dead and I wouldn't be lost in the middle of the forest. I've been trying to block out the pain of losing my friends and family, or at least all I knew of having a family. They said that my mom and dad only told them what was necessary to keep them safe. Safe from what killed them.
My mom was a beautiful woman who fell in love with my dad when she was in her early twenties. After six months together he asked her to marry him but told her it came with a price. Then he told her everything about him. What he was and about his past. She still said yes and ten months later, I was born. That is the story aunt Becky told me when I asked her about them but she didn't know what he was.
Aunt Becky was mom's best friend since middle school so dad agreed to tell them a bit about him but not what he was, just in case anything happened to them. Their death was a mystery. There were no bodies to bury or any signs of a fight. It was like they just walked off the face of the earth, and left me behind.
The rushing of the water sounded closer and my stomach grumbled. I finished all the food I could grab yesterday so today was going to be a challenge. Luckily, I had a water bottle with me. I glimpsed something red in a tall tree so I slowed down to take a closer look. Aha! It was an apple. A small apple but still an apple. I tried
