In the movie the problems that occurs the most happen within the family. The family's connection to one another is very weak. Sartosis Snope's father, Abner Snopes, constantly makes bad decisions which affect his children. For example, his father burns down a barn but luckily was found innocent because insufficient proof. His father moves his family to try to start a new life but because he has such a hatred towards people over him trouble keeps following them.
The problem starts with the father and his job; he focuses too much on his job instead of his family. While doing this he brings in a work associate and tries to force his daughter to marry him. Abner though gets mad at his boss, the Major of Spain. His dad tells Sartosis to go to the barn and get some wagon oil. His dad's plan is to go and set fire to the Major of Spain's barn too. Sartosis and to make a decision whether to do what his dad says to do or to do what he thinks is the right thing to do. This is when the family all turns against the dad and the daughter doesn't want anything to do with him. Sartosis makes the decision to try to stop his dad. If Sartosis had decided to be loyal to his dad and do what his dad said then he would have never tried to do the right thing. More than likely, Sartosis would wind up being a lot like his father since he would have basically helped his father do the bad things.
Family is where your home is and if you have a bad home life then you will act different out in the world. The way they can fix this problem is the dad taking time off to spend more time with the family. Although this did not happen, the daughter actually falls for the man her father introduced her too. If this wouldn't of happened the family would of probably of been over and all of them would of went their own way. The daughter hesitated to get in a relationship with the man because of his history but changes her mind when she sees the good in him and decides to start a relationship.
The father was single but had been dating a woman. The woman wanted Abner to marry her so he finally proposed and she said yes. The father also finally accepted his son and his sons' wife was proud of him. The son and his wife had problems because of his dad but now that is settled they are doing fine. This proves that family problems carry out and make problems for others too. Especially when the father is suppose to be the leader of the household and set an example for the rest of the family.
Before the daughter had decided to date the man his father had introduced to her she was dating a man that had no intentions of marrying her. He only wanted to date and stay friends. She was a woman trying to prove that women can work and do just as much as men can. She tries proving that by also neglecting the good looking man her dad introduced her too. As the movie goes on though, she lets go of her hard exterior.
