Bacterial Endospore
An endospore is produced by a bacteria when it is in stress. These structures are
dormant, non-reproductive and heat resistant. These are produced by the bacteria for the
purpose of survival to harsh environments and become “resistant to ultraviolet and gamma
radiation, desiccation, lysozyme, temperature, starvation, and chemical disinfectants” (Science
Daily, n.d.). From its term “endo-” meaning inside, while “-spore” meaning a dormant structure.
When combined, it is a dormant structure inside the vegetative cell (study.com, n.d.). Endospore
are usually found in gram positive bacteria (Medical Seraph, 2013).
The formation of endospore takes place in the bacterial cytoplasm of the vegetative cell.
It will then extrude out when the sporulation is done. Sporulation is a process of making
endospore which can be done by many genera of bacteria (Online Education Resorces, n.d.).
Some of these are the Clostridium, Heliobacterium, Brevibacillus, Sporohalobacter, Sporobacter,
Coxiella, Anaerobacter and many more (Wikipedia, n.d.). A spore is a resting cell that is resistant
to extreme environmental conditions. When the vegetative cell returned to a favorable
environment and is activated, the spore germinates for it to produce a vegetative cell (Medical
Seraph, 2013).
Endospore has an outer membrane, called exosporium, that is composed mainly of
lipids, protein and carbohydrates, which makes this structure hydrophobic. Due to this insoluble
characteristic of exosporium, it become an important part of the pathogenicity of the bacteria.
These special structures cannot be easily killed or destroyed. However, its mother cell
may be killed when subjected to a harsh condition. The endospore will be the one who will
preserve the genetic material of that bacterial cell and will soon grow its bacterial cell when the
environmental conditions are favorable. This process is called germination. When it is in it’s
favorable condition, the spore will break its dormancy and will began to grow the bacterial cell
(study.com, n.d.).
