Justification: Food Industry

Mondelez is a great example of how a medium local ice-cream company becomes in one of the biggest food manufacturer in the world with a huge list of products available.

Mondelez International

Thomas H. McInnerney founded Mondelez International on 1923 in the National Dairy Products Corporation (National Dairy) on which is rooted. This company has born to enter in a strategy where the ice cream industry was fragmented in the US at the time. Acquisitions were made and it expanded into the full range of dairy products. McInerney worked the Hydrox Corporation, an ice-cream company in Chicago. In 1923 he went to the Stock exchange seek for investment to finance his plan to raise the United States ice-cream industry. McInerney initially encountered resistance, with one banker disparaging the dairy industry. The company then became a pioneer in the manufacture of fine chocolates. In 1996 was acquired by Kraft Foods and in 2012 was divided into two independent companies, with its snacks unit becoming Mondelēz International.

In the beginning, McInerney had to face disapproving by third parties. He did not give up of; raise a consortium to finance his plan. Finally, National Dairy has born. The company was listed on the Wall Street, with an offering of 125,000 shares. National Dairy made a large number of acquisitions and grew; The Company acquired more than 55 companies between 1923 and 1931.

Almost 20 years ago, Philip Morris bought Nabisco and fused the company with Kraft Foods. Years later it sold its sugar confectionery to other Company. An Investor bought a percentage of Kraft Foods and stimulating the company by acquiring some fast food chains and selling others. Through the path, Kraft Foods had to deal with aggressive concurrence and strategies around the world from other companies to stop the company from growth. With Nabisco acquisition in July 2000 Kraft Foods Inc. becomes the second biggest food company in the world and the first one in profitability. Nabisco portfolio main brands here in Brazil are: Trakinas, Club Social, Chocooky, Bon Gouter and Royal desserts.

In February 2010 Kraft Foods Inc. acquired the worldly Cadbury, world lider in sweets and responsible for the Dairy Milk chocolate fabrication. In Brazil, more famous brands like Trident, Halls, Chiclets e Bubbaloo become part of the Mondelez International Inc. portfolio.
