Amy, a 4 year old Caucasian female has been complaining of being tired all the time.
She is pale and a picky eater. Her mother is a single mom with a small budget to feed
a large family. Amy eats only pasta, breads, and hot dogs. And drinks only artificial fruit
punch.
I believe that Amy has Anemia; symptoms of Anemia are pallor or deficiency of color.
Fatigue which is something that the report says she's suffering from, and other symptoms
are dizziness, headache, decreased exercise tolerance, rapid heart beat and shortness of
breath. There are a few types of Anemia. Anemia is a blood disorder it's a condition of
reduced numbers of red blood cells. There are ways that the number of blood cells and
oxygen delivery to cell and tissues are reduced. The cause can be hemorrhages, excessive
destruction or impaired synthesis of red blood cells, and chronic diseases.
These symptoms of Anemia are due to hypoxia or lack of oxygen. There's a few kind
of Anemia there's the iron deficiency one, there's also the Anemia of chronic disease
and the one I believe Amy has is the Vitamin B 12 or a deficiency in a protein called
Intrinsic factor, causes of this Anemia include inadequate diet, which Amy has
Inadequate absorption and other factors, and her cause of being tired all the time.
Marcus is a 5 year old African American male who has just moved to New York City
and is visiting his new pediatrician for a kindergarten physical. His mom tells the nurse
that she carries the Sickle Cell trait and wants Marcus screened for it.
Marcus may have Sickle Cell Anemia, this type of Anemia is genetically transmitted and
the mother carries the sickle cell trait. This disease is marked by severe hemolytic
Anemia, episodes of painful crisis and increased susceptibility to infections.
Because of the family history I believe that he may end up having sickle dell anemia.
Approximately 10% of African Americans have the sickle cell trait are heterozygous for
the disorder. Those that have the disease are homozygous or have inherited two genes
