Is Alfred Nobel purpose of the Nobel peace prize still being met today? Or is the worth and the purpose of the word peace, reduced? "Losing it Luster," is a very good article about the Nobel Peace prize and what the author feels its worth is now. The Economist feels that by giving the Nobel Peace Prize to some who is not truly deserving is diminishing its value. He also feels by not giving out the prize yearly is showing an act of bravery.
" Losing its Luster" begins its argument by establishing the diversity of the potential Nobel Peace Prize candidates. In 2006 Bono from the U2 group was nominated for helping to fight hunger and poverty. Martti Ahtisaari was awarded for his efforts to resolve international conflicts. Thich Quang Do of the outlawed united Buddhist church of Vietnam promotes religious freedom. It can be suspected that the author doesn't truly feel they are deserving by not giving them the proper respect referring to them as "Irish rock stars, Finnish diplomat, and a Vietnamese buddist "("Losing its Luster"). All of these people were nominated for different things, and are all different types of people. Naming these different nominees can be interfered that anybody can be nominated no matter who you are and what you do to promote peace.
The reason to withhold the prize is to preserve its value. Worth is being eroded by just finding someone. Buggins' turn is defined by appointment of person by rotation, or promotion as a result of mere length of service, rather than on merit. This is what the author feels the Nobel committee is doing, Instead of finding someone who truly deserves it. For example they went to the Middle East this year to nominate a woman, which they haven't been to the Middle East before. In contrary to that it can be said that the Nobel Prize went to the Middle East to show how far they grown to back when it started only, nominating white man. Not giving out the prize will not stop the peace movement. If people are truly trying to promote peace, getting recognized for your efforts is not important.
He has a problem with the people who are getting the award. He feels that many people awarded is not living up to the actual name peace. Alfred Nobel stated that the prize is dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congreses,"(quoted Lundstad). Wanagari Matthai was awarded for her environmental help but planting trees and Kenya, which although was a good deed, she didn't do much to promote peace. Alfred Nobel also stated that no prize is perfect. No matter who is awarded people will agree to disagree. Who is to be the judge of defining peace?
