Due to recent scientific advancements, scientist have been able to understand the human genome in much more depth to the point where they can predict whether or not a person is prone to get cancer in their lifetime or likely to become an alcoholic. This scientific advancement became a reality because of the Human Genome Project (HGP). The main goal of the HGP was to map out and identify all of the genes in the human genome and determine the sequence of the chemical base pairs that make up the human DNA. Now that the goals of the HGP has been completed their discoveries can be used to help and even hurt humanity. Although others think can do nothing but help humanity, they lose the battle when governments start thinking of marking and banning alcohol to people who are genetically prone to become alcoholics.
Marking people who are genetically prone to become an alcoholic would forever limit their life. Preventing a person from drinking at parties and from buying alcohol from stores. This completely remove what little freedom they have to drink. It’s not fair to restrict someone's life just on a prediction that may be true or not. Not only does it removes their drinking freedom it also adulterates work freedom, employers may not hire workers who are prone to become alcoholics. This law would only hurt people than helping them.
Others may think this law would prevent many dangers such as drunk driving, It won’t. There are already laws that prevent both people prone to become alcoholics and nonalcoholics from driving while intoxicated. The government does need to target a specific group of people to prevent those dangers. Everyone will be affected the same way when they drink alcohol.
People should have the freedom of choice. They can choose to take the test for their own private findings but not for public. If they can see that they’re prone to become alcoholics they’ll probably be more careful when they drink. The government doesn’t have to step in to stop individuals from living their life as rich as they can. The government should only step in when people prone to become alcoholics are actually putting others in dangers.
It’s wrong to mark and ban people from drinking alcohol base on their genetics because they lose access to things as important as a good job to more flexible things such as recreational drinking at a party. People should only find out they might become alcoholics if they please too and they can take action towards preventing it while they are still able to enjoy a drink or two at a party.
