Affirmative Action

I believe race should continue to be used as a determinant of college admissions, in conjunction with the top 10% rule. My first reason is that affirmative action really benefits minorities. Some believe minorities don't have it as good as white people. That's why the top 10% policy was adopted. According to the case fisher Vs. UT, it states, "the race neutral policy had a positive effect on minority enrollment". Most colleges now ask the person that is applying what their race is. There's been a lot of controversy with this because some people believe they were denied from a college because of this. That doesn't seem true at all. According to the pacific legal foundation it states, "I'm sure we all shared the experience of being rejected from some university". This shows that it doesn't matter what your race is, you can still get rejected. We all win some and lose some in life.

Another reason why I think affirmative action should be continued is because it promotes diversity in many colleges. Affirmative action has created an atmosphere of diversity and racial tolerance in colleges all across America. Most of the time students, who grew up and were taught in a single culture setting, are better equipped to succeed in a multicultural school setting. This causes interaction between different races, which can help put aside years of harsh discrimination. The principle of supporting affirmative action is to promote diversity and to level the cultural playing field. America is supposed to be a melting pot and diversity is the main ingredient, and affirmative action is helping to add to the cultural fusion.

Last but definitely not least, my final reason on which I think affirmative action should still be used as a determinant of college admissions, is because it helps eliminate years of discrimination towards minorities. Affirmative action seeks to redress past discrimination of minorities. Mainly through active measures to ensure equal opportunities, in education and employment. In fact Ii was created to hopefully eliminate racial preference and finally equalize the United States. This long hard fight against discrimination started all the way back with the case Plessey vs. Ferguson; which resulted in desegregation of all schools. Affirmative action was first introduced in 1965, and it has shown great success. Affirmative action still stands today only because it's needed. Which means discrimination is less but not completely gone. I truly believe affirmative action is one of the best moves towards equality by America.

In conclusion I highly disagree that affirmative action is reverse discrimination, that's outrageous and immoral thinking. This policy is not aimed to bring down white individuals. This is why I agree with affirmative action.
